Surface Preparation

The Foundation of Every Successful Floor

Surface preparation is the single most important factor that determines the success or failure of a concrete coating. At Protective Coating Specialists, we invest in state-of-the-art equipment and experienced crews because we understand that even the best coating system will fail without proper substrate preparation.

Surface Preparation

The PCS approach

We don't cut corners. Every project begins with thorough surface evaluation and testing. We identify contamination, structural issues, moisture concerns, and substrate conditions before recommending the appropriate preparation method. This diagnostic approach is what separates lasting installations from premature failures.

Shot Blasting The tool of choice for professional concrete contractors. Shot blasting creates the rough surface profile necessary for coatings and sealers to bond properly. Our equipment fires scores of tiny steel shot at the surface repeatedly, efficiently removing contaminants and creating the ideal mechanical bond.

Diamond Grinding Precision grinding for creating level surfaces and removing existing coatings, adhesives, or damaged concrete layers.

Scarification Aggressive removal for heavily damaged or contaminated concrete, ideal for eliminating thick coatings or surface defects.

Oil Removal Systems (ORS) If your concrete slab is oil-impregnated, hard to clean, and won't accept coatings, we have the solution. Our specialized oil removal system emulsifies and extracts oils from concrete surfaces, solving problems that cause other contractors to fail.

High-Pressure Water Blasting Powerful cleaning for removing contaminants, preparing surfaces, and addressing drainage issues.

Floor Covering Removal Multiple types of specialized equipment for removing:

  • VCT (vinyl composite tile)
  • Ceramic and quarry tile
  • Laminates
  • Hardwoods
  • Carpet and padding

Our compact Sase Twister can maneuver through tight hallways and congested spaces with ease.

Why Preparation Matters

Proper surface preparation ensures:

  • Correct coating adhesion
  • Uniform, level final finish
  • Freedom from defects and failures
  • Maximum longevity of your flooring investment
